UBC's new swimming pool is a long way away from most Breitbart News Network readers.

But that didn't stop an ad for the facility from showing up on the controversial right-wing website.

Breitbart News has been accused of promoting white ethnonationalism by its former editor-at-large, Ben Shapiro.

This occurred under the tenure of Steve Bannon, who went on to become President Donald Trump's campaign manager and later, chief strategist in the White House.

When the UBC ad was spotted by Emma Pullman, lead strategist of the progressive group SumOfUs, the university immediately responded by pulling the message.

UBC isn't the only B.C. postsecondary institution that has had ads on Breitbart News.

Trinity Western University, which is based in Langley, also has had at least one ad on the Breitbart News site.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, has accused Breitbart News of promoting racist, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim ideas. It stated that these are key tenets of the "alt-right".

"Breitbart recently published a lengthy defense of the Alt-Right, claiming the white nationalists such as Richard Spencer and Jared Taylor who created the ideology 'have been accused of racism,' choosing to ignore the well-documented openly-racist views," the SPLC stated.

Spencer was recently punched in the face in front of a camera, which generated huge discussion over social media.
