Victorious former Cambie Street merchant Susan Heyes has seen off the Canada Line after four years.

Now she’s working on a new line—of clothing. When the Straight reached Heyes by phone May 28 to ask what she was doing with her time now that she has won a $600,000 court settlement, she said she was about to send out a rather interesting line to the people who create her garments.

"I’m making some bamboo cotton spandex tank tops right now in multicolours," she said. "I’m cutting these and they’ll be off to the sewers and we’ll have them in the store in a week or so."

In a ruling issued yesterday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ian Pitfield awarded Heyes $600,000 in damages due to the loss of revenues due to the cut-and-cover trench construction along Cambie Street. She began looking at the legal channel four years ago, and for Heyes the result is "great", but the settlement bittersweet.

"I don’t know what’s fair after fighting for something for four years, but it certainly helps," Heyes said.

Now Heyes is preparing for daughter’s graduation this weekend—"I’ll be having lots to celebrate"—before looking ahead to the coming months in her Main Street store.

"I’m looking forward to brighter days ahead, and a much more relaxed summer than I’ve had for the last four years," she added.
