Pedestrian dies after being pinned by car in Kitsilano

Vancouver has registered its eighth traffic-related fatality of 2012.

Early this afternoon (June 11), a woman died after she was hit by a car in Kitsilano.

According to Vancouver police, a 67-year-old man was attempting to parallel park in the 2800 block of West Broadway. His car accelerated and struck the 52-year-old Vancouver woman, who was walking on the sidewalk.

The woman was pinned between the car and a storefront. She was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries.

Police say the driver remained at the scene, and they don't consider speed and alcohol to be factors in the fatality. The car is slated to undergo mechanical testing.

Investigators are asking witnesses to call 604-717-3012.

This is why seniors should be tested yearly for their driving abilities. When you get old, you get slower, your vision is not as good, and everything just doesnt work as well as it did before.

67 barely qualifies as senior. I'm under 40 and have had my foot get stuck under the pedal too, age probably has little to do with it.

What happens to the 67 year old man? does he get arrested or get fined?

I agree that after a certain age, say 70, we should be tested yearly. However this type of accident can happen to anyone. We've all heard of cars going through 7/11 windows. Unfortuantely this time someone was killed. Really tragic. Just blocks from my home.

Pedestrians need to keep their head on a swivel at all times. I wasn't there but I can imagine as the vehicle pulled up to park the woman should have waited for it to come to a complete stop, but what is always the case people tend to not pay attention to the risks that are all around them with large moving objects. I believe this tragedy was avoidable if the women and all others for that matter paid attention.

Someone should walk up behind you one day on the sidewalk and blindside you with a haymaker to see if you are paying attention to the risks around you.
