Poetry and song

Performance poet Leanne Averbach, who lives in both Vancouver and New York, recites strange and sensuous verse concerning family encounters, supermarkets, lovers, art, and politics-to a backdrop of jazz songs and themes. Her latest book, fever (Mansfield Press, $16.95), and an album with the same title were released in NYC, Toronto, and Montreal earlier this year. The West Coast launch date is next Thursday (August 11) at the Cellar (3611 West Broadway), where Averbach will be accompanied by local jazz trio Indigo, featuring saxophonist Astrid Sars, keyboardist Anna Lumiere, and guitarist Budge Schachte. The music ranges from George Gershwin to Chet Baker, and the poems swing from worldly to wild.
