Urinetown at the Firehall Arts Centre

    1 of 1 2 of 1

The outrageous musical Urinetown is set in a Depression-like future. The environment has collapsed, water is scarce, and everybody has to pay to pee.

While taking the piss out of capitalism, Urinetown also delivers a camp homage to musical theatre. When the poor, who can’t afford to go wee wee, take a hostage, their moves as they sing “Snuff That Girl” come straight out of West Side Story.

The original Firehall Arts Centre mounting, which went up in 2006, won the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for outstanding production (by a large-scale company) and outstanding director (Donna Spencer). Spencer is at the helm this time, too, with a new cast that includes the stellar Tracey Power, Andrew Wheeler, Meghan Gardiner, and David Adams. Once again, the excellent costume designs are by Barbara Clayden. Go with the flow at the Firehall Arts Centre from Thursday (November 6) to November 29.

Saw the first preview Saturday, and I think it is even better this time around than in 2006. Certainly more true to the work than the over the top production playing London's West End with a muscle bound Bobby Strong bursting out of his clothing.
