Bentall Centre warns tenants about Occupy Vancouver protest

No doubt the following isn't the only memo like this being issued in the lead-up to the Occupy Vancouver protest on Saturday (October 15).

Signed by Jon Wellman, vice president and general manager for the Bentall Centre at Bentall Kennedy (Canada) Limited Partnership, this message went out today (October 12) to tenants of Bentall 5:

As many of you may be aware, the “Occupy Vancouver” Protest is scheduled for Saturday, October 15th, 2011 on the lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery and its surrounding streets. This protest is modeled on the Occupy Wall Street Demonstrations currently taking place in New York and elsewhere.

Bentall Kennedy would like to take this opportunity to advise our tenants that we are well aware of the planned protest and are working with law enforcement agencies to monitor the situation. In addition, enhanced security measures for Bentall 5 have been implemented by our security contractor, Paladin Security.

The Vancouver Police Department has liaised with the event organizers in order to facilitate a peaceful demonstration. However, there may be traffic disruptions in the area of Howe and Georgia Streets and there is the possibility of random marches through the streets, or to specific locations associated with “big business”. The City of Vancouver will be removing free-standing news boxes within a four-block radius of the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG). As well, on-street parking will be removed within a one-block radius of VAG by the end of business on Friday, October 14th, 2011.

Bentall 5 is the glassy office building that towers over Burrard Street at Dunsmuir Street in the city's financial district.

Home to financial, mining, and other companies, such as Citibank Canada and Eldorado Gold Corporation, Bentall 5 could easily be one of the "Capitalist Hot Spots" targeted by Occupy Vancouver marches this weekend.

Ha ha they are so scared. Of what? A bunch of hippies banging on bongos? Some silly chants about 99 per cent? Don't flatter yourselves, you aren't really that important in the grand ponzi scheme of things.

We live in a country no longer represented by the people but by the interests of major corporations and the money they use through lobbying to pay off our elected officials. These politicians no longer voice the opinion of the voters who put them in office but instead speak for the special interests which pay them more and more money to turn a blind eye to the destruction of our environment and the extinction of the middle class. How long will the occupations have to last before a SINGLE government official asks what WE the PEOPLE want changed? Visit my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/09/occupywallstreet.html to see my art for the movement and also see videos of the protests and police brutality as well as get other sources for coverage of the movement.

Anyone unsure about what this movement is about, go to youtube and search "money As Debt". Itt explains the trap we are in and why it is mathematically impossible to pay down our debt, if the only way we can get money is to borrow it from a private company at interest, just to pay that same company. It explains the families that have conqured most of the world by running this scam for centuries and why we are all debt slaves to their massive empire.

As a New Yorker living in Vancouver, I have to say Occupy Vancouver is pathetic and has zero resemblance to Occupy Wall St. The Wall St demonstrations are about disenchantment of the shrinking American middle class with respect to the disparity in wealth distribution. While I have my own qualms with some of their claims, and while the protests lack clear direction and without a singular voice for leadership yet to emerge, the Occupy Vancouver movement is a total joke. For a country to have come out the most unscathed from the economic crisis, and a province to have the most comprehensive social programs in a country that is already known for its social programs, this is clearly just a group of people who will never stop asking for more.

Hear, hear. I could not agree with you more. You have hit the nail squarely on the head.

Most Canadians have absolutely no clue how bad things are economically in the US. We hear "9% unemployment" on the news, but the reality of the long-term unemployment problem, the ongoing foreclosure crisis, the failure of corporations to reinvest their record profits and the refusal of banks to loan to small businesses are not understood here.

The US financial elite got bailed out of the consequences of their own criminality 3 years ago, then went on strike for ever-lower taxes and full control of the political system.

Canada is an island of civil prosperity by comparison. Our banks were properly regulated and capitalized - and forbidden by law from engaging in the sort of speculation and trashing of lending standards that blew up the system in the US. We were lucky - and now we are complacent.

If the Vancouver OWS event turns into another excuse for a riot, the organizers had better understand that they are responsible for the betrayal of everything they pretend to stand for.

      Already Here ...

What's there to be threatened about? A bunch of people that choose to not work sitting on the streets, playing instruments, while bleeding heart cooperatives give them free food, clothes & other hand-outs ... all the while blaming others for where they're at, but not really having a clear idea of what's going on or how changes will be realistically made.

Occupy Vancouver has already been here for ages!

Property Managers should stick to issuing Rent Notice(s) + making sure the floors are clean.

Anything beyond that is clearly beyond their capability.

Hey GG, It is not mathematically impossible to pay down debt. It requires people to be honest with themselves, clear headed, and not think they need "things" to have a fulfilling life. Some people who are in debt are in that situation because they think they are entitled to "things" so they can be perceived as being as well off as other people. Unfortunately, some people also go into debt because they are in dire situations. But the answer is not to borrow money, but to live within your means - and be happy and content with your life, whatever the circumstances.

Kudos to the Straight for some digging and an actual fact based piece of journalism on this issue as compared to the junk written by Ethan Barron in the Province This is why people should read GS.
