Cars were flipped and set on fire, but so far, no confirmed fatalities in Vancouver's Stanley Cup riot

Above, you'll see one of many photos on a Facebook page devoted to tagging the Vancouver rioters.

It left me wondering how much all this damage downtown is going to cost.

I remember the 1994 riot on Robson Street after the Canucks lost Game 7 to the New York Rangers.

That was a walk in the park compared to the chaos that occurred tonight after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup final to the Boston Bruins.

An official from the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority told News 1130 that there haven't been any reported fatalities at St. Paul's Hospital.

But there are 50 people receiving treatment in the emergency room and another 19 people waiting for treatment. Others in the courtyard were there because they had been tear-gassed.

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson told reporters around 10:30 p.m. that he hadn't heard of any fatalities either.

      Keep your fingers crossed.

Vancouver...city of sorry losers (the hockey fans anyway).

This place really knows how to embarrass itself in epic fashion.

lets see, I heard about three guys have been knocked out, one could have some real damage to his brain, another broke his back. I can't believe they allow hockey to be around. You think it's surprising people punch people after a game of punching people? The purpose is to fight, hit heads against boards to make people happy. take out their madness, they fight. real life people can't contain their emotions well, no big surprise at all. so stop feeling their head beating anger release game.

That wasn't about hockey or hockey fans, it was about a bunch of vandals and thieves that had it planned either way.

You've heard this, you've heard that: consider looking up an official police or news report to confirm the rumours before you spread them.

These people ARE NOT VANCOUVER CANUCKS FANS. Please don't paint the thousands and thousands of us with the same brush. Those who were a part of the riot went prepared, knowing full well of their intentions post-game, rain or shine. They had booze, bandanas, accelerants, and fully intended to use the game as an excuse to commit criminal acts.

Fighting is one thing. They're mostly young BOYS (not men, because those people out there were fucking children) who get drunk, get stupider, and get riled up way too easily. Fights were expected. Looting and destroying my hometown was too, but I think everyone hoped that those in Vancouver (not necessarily Vancouverites) would at most stick to their private wars instead of start one between the city.

I'm just glad there's a huge pile of evidence now left for the cops.

This is absolutely NOT representative of Vancouver. The people rioting were not Canucks fans, the were just people looking to come into Vancouver and cause trouble. We should be very proud of our Vancouver Canucks, and how well they did this season. Too bad a few bad apples decided to act in "Bruins style" (referring to how Boston fans treated Vancouver fans in Boston).

It isn't just a few hooligans. It's the spirit of a crappy game (commercial hockey) expanding itself out into society. Violent and crude team spectator sports legitimize violence and engender mob consciousness (group think). This is how the ultra rich controlling elite shape the populace into competitive tribalism (identification with your group in a dog eat dog law of the jungle culture) in order to embrace unjust, illegal, expensive, security diminishing, murderous wars that are essential to progressively transform global society into a police state. The public pay billions of dollars in taxes to build and maintain these massive stadiums and provide security for these gladiatorial displays of insanity that bring out the worst in people and turn them into slavering idiots that get either ecstatic or depressed about nothing of importance - on cue like mindless programmed robots. By idolizing sports celebrities who are modern day gladiators who commit acts of physical prowess and violence for profit, we internalise in the masses the values which found expression in the senseless violence which we witnessed on the streets of Vancouver last night. Men and women who spoke to the violent sports fans and asked them not to destroy their cars and other property were savagely beaten while the crowd simply stood and cheered the violence, just as in the game.
