I would have done anything for her. She didn't care though so I left and filled an empty life with travel and saving. Now I think her priorities are changing. Maybe a stable guy who could pull his weight around the house would make a good option. Feeling conflicted though. If I win the affection of the woman but only because I fulfill a role, is that something to celebrate?

You do understand that's the whole point right? You fill the role for her, or take off....
Maturity is understanding that in life NOTHING is perfect - some things are great in a relationship, others aren't. Most wankers just take off at the first sign of trouble. To be married for 39+ years takes resolve, understanding and love.
As your life moves forward, you will realize that the things you hold important now, will not be so important, and may even seem trite, when you are 25 years in the future.
