A report going to the Metro Vancouver housing committee on Friday (March 8) indicates how much prices have risen since the Regional Affordable Housing Strategy was adopted by the regional government in 2007.

The report notes that between 2007 and 2012, average monthly rent in the region rose from $898 to $1,047. The average cost of a new detached home rose from $700,000 to $890,000 between 2007 and 2011.

One of the more startling statistics was the 56 percent drop in rental units costing less than $750 per month between 2007 and 2011. Over the same period, there was a 29 percent reduction in the number of entry-level homeownership units costing less than $385,000.

Street homelessness dropped 52 percent between 2008 to 2011, whereas the number of people staying in shelters jumped 74 percent.
