With a typical price of at least a million dollars in Metro Vancouver, detached homes are valued highly by British Columbians.

Ninety-two percent of respondents in a survey reported that they want to see new single-family homes with car garages in at least some developments in the future.

In fact, almost half or 44 percent indicated that all or most developments should be detached houses, according to the poll conducted by McAllister Opinion Research on behalf of the Real Estate Foundation of B.C.

“Interestingly, large luxury estate homes are the one type of development that the majority (69%) of British Columbians would like to see little or none of,” according to the survey’s highlights report released Thursday (February 18).

Intended to measure public perceptions on the built environment and sustainability, the survey had a sample of 1,701 adult B.C. residents. They were polled between July 28 and July 30, 2015. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

When it comes to compact communities, 81 percent approve of high-density developments as long as these are low-rises.

“However, if the same development is high-rise, a very small portion (16%) want all or most and only half (52%) would accept at least some development of this type,” the report noted.

In addition, 17 per cent of survey participants reported that they want no high-rise developments.

The report stated: “It’s clear that we need to have a better conversation about density that includes infill, mid- and low-rise options.”

Other highlights of the survey results:

      • Four in five B.C. residents say the quality of life in their communities is good or excellent.
      • One in two believes that ordinary citizens don’t have enough say in planning and development.
      • Twenty-five percent says all or most development should include mixed-income rental homes.
