In one of the best signs yet that the Vancouver Canucks have given up on the playoffs this year, long-time fan favourite Alex Burrows has been traded to the Ottawa Senators.

Reports are that the winger will get a two-year $2.5-million contract extension from the Sens, who are playoff-bound. Burrows in the final season of a four-year Canucks deal. He agreed to waive a no-trade clause.

In return the Canucks receive Swedish winger Jonathan Dahlen, a second-round Senators pick in 2016 who is primarily known as a goal scorer.

Originally undrafted, the 35-year-old Burrows has played in 822 regular season games, all of them with the Vancouver Canucks. He scored one of the biggest goals in team history in the 2011 playoffs, notching a game 7 overtime winner against the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round. That goal was immortalized by Canucks play-by-play man John Shorthouse, who famously announced "they've slayed the dragon".

The Canucks eventually went to the Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the Boston Bruins.

Ottawa currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference and is loading up for a playoff run.

The Canucks are 11th in the Western Conference and the fourth-worst team in the league.

Speculation is that multi-purpose forward Janick Hansen may also be asked if he'd be willing to waive his limited no-trade clause in the days ahead. The NHL's trade deadline is this Wednesday.

After looking poised to make a playoff run around Christmas, the Canucks have seriously tanked in recent weeks, going 3-7 in their last 10 games.
