It will also be blistering hot in the Lower Mainland this weekend.

That's prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement about a "strong upper ridge of high pressure".

"Temperatures will peak this weekend with maximums of at least 32 degrees [Celsius] expected away from the water," it states.

The scorching weekend weather may break records in parts of the Fraser Valley.

In Abbotsford, the record high is 31.4 degrees on Saturday (June 24) and 32 degrees on Sunday (June 25).

Community centres, public libraries, and movie theatres offer a respite from the heat.

Meanwhile, the City of Vancouver is scheduled to update its climate-change adaptation strategy this year.

It addresses extreme weather and heavy-rain events, sea-level rise, and preparation for heat waves.

One of the key strategies is increasing the tree canopy in Vancouver.

Mayor Gregor Robertson's party, Vision Vancouver, promised to ensure that 150,000 new trees would be planted in the city by 2020.
