Delta school board candidates win by acclamation

The seven candidates for the Delta school board won’t have to do a lot of flesh-pumping in this civic election or do any hand-wringing when the counting starts on November 15.

With the number of candidates equivalent to the number of trustees on the board, Delta chief elections officer Gil Mervyn has declared the seven elected by acclamation.

Mervyn’s declaration, dated October 20, lists the following as elected school trustees: Laura Dixon, Gordon Masi, Fabian Milat, Dale Saip, Brenda Schneider, Janet Shauntz, and Simon Truelove.

Of the seven, Masi, Milat, Saip, and Truelove are incumbent school trustees.

Truelove told the Straight that he was pleasantly surprised by the acclamation. He recalled that the 2005 election for school board was closely fought, with three slates running candidates.

Truelove, who was elected in that year, also ran but failed to win in the 2002 election.

Incumbent chair Kelly Guichon, vice chair Teresa Townsley, and trustee Heather King did not seek reelection.

Townsley told the Straight that she quit as trustee when she ran in the recent federal election.

She was fielded by the NDP as its candidate for Newton-North Delta, a riding won by incumbent Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal.
