The innovative Calcutta-based master Debashish Bhattacharya makes the slide guitar sing and moan with the voice of India. He’s created several new models of the instrument to bring out the sensuality, emotional depths, and tonal subtleties of Hindustani music, from ragas to folk tunes. His technique combines grace and power. When he comes to the Capilano Performing Arts Theatre this Saturday (September 26), accompanied by his brother Subhasis on tablas, Bhattacharya will perform his original songs from the Grammy-nominated album Calcutta Chronicles: Indian Slide Guitar Odyssey, as well as from this summer’s release, O Shakuntala!, with compositions inspired by an ancient love story.
