Prepare to have your preconceptions about metal art pushed. For its 40th anniversary, Circle Craft Co-operative Association has just opened the exhibition New Work in the Net Loft gallery on Granville Island. Among its fantastically forged treasures are Roberto Fioravanti’s chunky, semi-industrial but intensely sculptural lockets, boxes, and other creations—jewellery and nonjewellery, the functional and the ethereal. Fioravanti’s work (left) is joined by that of jewellery artist Brian Hoyano, whose Lifeboat Series speaks to destruction and escape. His sculptures draw influences from ancient folk art, Asian aesthetics, and sleek contemporary industrial design. The show runs to October 1.
