Listeria cited in recall of President's Choice and Bassé sunflower seeds

      The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced that Bassé Frères Alimentation Oriental (2013) Inc. is recalling certain Bassé brand and certain President's Choice products.

      The concern is "possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination", according to the food recall warning.

      The pathogen can cause vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, stiffness of the neck. In pregnant woman, it can infect the newborn or cause stillbirth.

      "Consumers should not consume and distributors, retailers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes should not sell or use the recalled product," the CFIA stated.

      This salad topper is also on the recall.

      The following products are on the recall list:

      • 230-gram, 454-gram, and 1.65-kilogram Basse unsalted sunflower kernels;
      • 425-gram Basse Alive salad topper (with dried cranberries, sunflower seed kernels, and walnuts);
      • 6-kilogram Hicking trail mix;
      • 400-gram President's Choice roasted sunflower seeds, both salted and unsalted;
      • and 325-gram President's Chioice mountain trail mix.
      These unsalted sunflower seeds are being pulled off of store shelves.

      There have been no illnesses reported from the consumption of these products, according to the CFIA.
