Popular Japanese coffee shop % Arabica to open in Whistler

Java fiends, assemble (and get ready to wait in line): there’s a new coffee shop coming to Whistler.

% Arabica originally opened in Kyoto in 2014, and in the decade since it has expanded massively, opening 188 stores across 24 countries. The Whistler joint is the brand’s third Canadian storefront—and first in Western Canada—following two openings in Toronto.

“We’re thrilled to introduce % Arabica’s distinctive coffee and lifestyle experience to Whistler, a destination renowned for its outdoor activities and appreciation for quality,” says Kenneth Shoji, founder of % Arabica, in a statement. “Whistler’s breathtaking scenery and international appeal perfectly align with % Arabica’s ethos of inviting people to ‘See the World Through Coffee.’”

Shoji first became interested in coffee when he moved from Tokyo to Venice Beach, California in the 1990s. He ended up buying a coffee farm in Hawaii, trading green beans, and eventually exporting Japanese roasting machines in his quest to create a world-leading coffee blend of his own.

The brand is known for its extremely aesthetic stores. Individual locations can differ, but they largely share minimalistic sensibilities with plenty of clean white walls, geometric shapes, and natural light. The Whistler store looks to be no less stunning, with a monochromatic white palette and curved walls that evoke natural formations, like caves or snowdrifts.

Whistler’s % Arabica location opens on May 11, and will offer free pastries to the first 50 customers. So don’t be surprised if you’ve found your new pre-slope, post-hike coffee spot.
