Gastown's Shine Nightclub to close after 14 years
The disco ball will stop spinning at a popular Gastown nightclub this fall. After 14 years, Shine Nightclub (364 Water Street) will close on September 27 to make way for a new late-night venue later this year.
“Shine has been an original in Gastown for years, and is one of our most beloved clubs. However, sometimes change is a good thing and we believe that Vancouver will fall in love with this new concept just as they have with Shine,” Alvaro Prol, co-owner of Blueprint, which owns Shine Nightclub, stated in a news release today (August 22). “Shine’s legacy will always live on through the talent and people that got its start at the club, and the memories that have been created there.”
Blueprint—a locally owned entertainment giant, which recently moved its headquarters to Gastown—purchased Shine in 2012. During an interview with the Straight at the time, co-owner Carlo Giusto hinted that the nightlife venue would be renovated and rebranded at some point.
“We’re talking about starting fresh. We don’t have any dates planned yet, but it’s definitely under new management, and we’re definitely gonna have the place open five days a week, compared to the two it’s open right now,” he said.
In addition to Shine, Blueprint owns five other nightclubs in Vancouver: Celebrities on Davie Street, Fortune in Chinatown, as well as Caprice, Venue, and L.E.D. Bar along the Granville Entertainment District. The company also owns three liquor stores and a handful of restaurants, including Bismarck, The Charles Bar, Colony Kits, and Dover Arms.
In a recent interview with the Straight, Blueprint’s Bill Kerasiotis said that they’re interested in expanding to the suburbs.
“A lot of our old customers are starting to move out there, whether it’s with families or not,” he noted. “So I think there will be some success.”
To celebrate the end of Shine Nightclub—which catered to diverse musical styles, including dancehall, rap, grime, techno, and funk—Blueprint will host a closing party on September 27.

Oh man, this is sad! It's the end of an era. I will always remember Shine for two things: going there regularly when I was 16 for their 80s nights on Thursdays and that one time I managed to have sneaky sex in their backroom bathroom. RIP Shine.
