What’s In Your Fridge is where the Straight asks interesting Vancouverites about their life-changing concerts, favourite albums, and, most importantly, what’s sitting beside the Heinz ketchup in their custom-made Big Chill Retropolitan 20.6-cubic-foot refrigerators.

      Who are you

Hey! I’m Andrea Clute, a singer songwriter born and raised in Vancouver, BC. I’ve been singing since I was a child, however I was extremely shy! My parents would have to beg me to sing karaoke at family parties. Eventually they signed me up for musical theatre where I grew to love performing and started singing at school talent shows. For a few years I gave up on music because I didn’t know what else to do with it besides singing covers. Until my brother started showing me songs he made and I was in awe! I said, “I want to do that,” so he introduced me to his producer friends and the rest is history. They are now some of my best friends and helped kickstart my artist journey.

After releasing a few singles on my own 604 Records reached out to me, and after meeting with them and doing some writing sessions I ended up signing a deal! I now have my debut EP Unsaid that contains six songs that are just very honest and true to me. It’s my first project and I’m just so grateful to have had these opportunities and so excited for what’s to come.

      First concert

My first concert was Justin Bieber "My World" in 2010 with my mom. I was, I think, 13 years old at the time and was so excited. I honestly don’t remember too much from that night except that it made me a bigger fan than I already was.

      Life-changing concert

A few years later I went to Justin Bieber’s "Believe Tour" and that was the most memorable concert I ever attended. That was my peak fan girl era being a huge belieber. I tie-dyed my shirt purple cos that was his colour, and all my friends and I skipped school that day to try and find him before the concert. We of course didn’t, but we met his guitarist which was close enough. We were 9th row and I knew every single song and was just in shock being so close to my favourite artist.

I remember being crushed when I realized I wasn’t being picked to be the “one less lonely girl”, which is a segment where his team goes out and chooses one girl for him to serenade to. I came home crying ’cos I was so sad the night was over, and that I would probably never see or be that close to him again. It was such an inspiring concert where I could only dream that that could be me on a stage one day. To this day that is my most memorable and favorite concert.

      Top three records

Ariana Grande Thank U Next  Every song is a hit! She inspired me in many ways—when I would go to the studio I kept wanting to make things in a similar vibe. I’ve always loved her vocal range but I think her melodies and her ability to go from a faster flow to slowing things down are what sold me.

SZA SOS  A new favorite of mine, I just want to blast it on my speakers and scream every song. Her emotional ballads are so captivating I’d never had an album on repeat more than that one in such a short amount of time of it being out.

Taylor Swift Speak Now  Her lyricism is unmatched. The whole album felt so personal and it made me become a Taylor Swift fan. I’ve always loved her music, but this album as a whole is truly a masterpiece! It’s a no skip album for me.

      All-time favourite video

A*teens "Upside Down"  When I was younger, maybe eight years old, my brother and I would be allowed to watch a music video on our computer before bed. I would always choose the A*teens’ “Upside Down”. I was so obsessed with that song and video I was glued to the screen. I wanted to be them ha-ha-ha. I loved the choreography and the way it was filmed. I honestly want to make a music video like that one day.

      What’s in your fridge?

Coke Zero. My weakness! It just goes with everything and I can drink it like water ha-ha. In the summer too with ice, just hits different.

Almond milk hazelnut coffee creamer. I need it every morning with my coffee.

Maple syrup. I’m Canadian so I refuse to have any other type of syrup.
