Apathy is Dead campaign targets young voters in Canada

Three Vancouver youth and media organizations have teamed up to encourage young Canadians to cast ballots in the May 2 federal election.

The Apathy is Dead campaign is being organized by Get Your Vote On, Gen Why Media Project, and Fresh Media.

“At its heart it’s just looking to get young people conscious about voting and politics and getting engaged in civic society more,” said Tara Mahoney, creative director with Gen Why Media.

“We’re not touting a particular [political] party,” she told the Straight.

“It’s more just about getting people to get informed and vote.”

Events tied to the Apathy is Dead campaign include an April 22 Earth Day parade and youth rally on Commerical Drive starting at 11 a.m.

Also planned is a forum called Remixology 5: The New Frontier of Politics and Social Media, taking place April 27 at 7 p.m. at the Waldorf Hotel on East Hastings. Tickets are $10 at the door and $5 in advance.

That is followed at 9:30 p.m. with a free-admission dance party called Celebrate the Death of Apathy, also at the Waldorf.

Apathy is Dead organizers are also calling on others across the country to plan and promote their own events to encourage voting.

It was sad to see that Conservative handlers were at the University of Guelph interrupting the legitimate special ballot vote trying to take voting - trying to keep students from voting. If people cannot see why it is important to get out and vote - based on this episode - I would suggest this country - quietly is lost.

Harper did out and out declare, He is setting Canada up for Global Governance. He shocked everyone by that speech. He will use every dirty tactic in the book, to win this election. He is rabid and frantic to win, right down to begging for a majority. Canada is not safe with Harper at the helm. He gives me the creeps. He is sly and underhanded, and works behind our backs. He and his party are held in contempt, by the House. There has been corruption, in Harper's camp, fingers in the cookie jar money. He most certainly will not get my vote.
