Local actors Gabrielle Rose and Veena Sood have just won Sam Payne awards.

The Union of B.C. Performers/ACTRA has announced Rose will receive this year's Sam Payne award for lifetime achievement. She's best known for her role in films by Canadian directors like Atom Egoyan, Bruce Sweeney, and Carl Bessai, but is also familiar on local stages like the Arts Club (in shows like Doubt and Other Desert Cities).

Sood, who receives a 2014 award for an actor whose accomplishments mirror those of the star for whom the award is named,  is recognized for her work across theatre, film, television, cartoon voices,  and improv comedy. Sood, who has more than 100 plays to her credit, helped develop the Vancouver TheatreSpots League, cofounded Calgary's Loose Moose Theatre, and is the co-artistic director of Truth Be Told Theatre’s The Life Game.

The awards are named for the late icon in the B.C. acting community, who died 33 years ago.

The Union of British Columbia Performers is an autonomous branch of the national ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) and hands out the two awards on an annual basis.
