You Nearly Missed: Strength Through Art Network Diversity Festival

Blackout Art Society’s third annual STAND festival is nearly upon us.

STAND, which stands for Strength Through Art Network Diversity, is a festival spotlighting immigrant and refugee artists across a range of different disciplines. Running from November 2 to 12, the 10-day program is packed with performances to make you laugh, cry, think, or otherwise experience some kind of emotion in the way that only art can manage.

“As you immerse yourself in the kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and narratives, remember that every artist here has a unique story to tell, a perspective to share, and a contribution that enriches the fabric of our society,” say executive producer Soha Sanojou and artistic director Amirnaeim Hosseini in a joint statement.

From one-off theatrical productions that follow personal immigrational narratives (Grace Chin’s rEvolver hit A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Canada) to a night of blended Persian, Indian, Chinese, and North American musical traditions (The Last Dance Ballet) or Harem Jamal’s defiant visual art exhibition (Igniting Strength, Shaping Inspiration), there’s a broad range of creativity on display.

The festival takes place at venues across Vancouver and North Van: Presentation House Theatre, Scotiabank Dance Centre, and the Annex.

Besides performances, there’s also a live podcast taping that explores Iran’s modern history through audio journalism; and a variety of workshops for aspiring creatives and community organizers. Ticket prices vary, though many are free by donation or pay what you can to keep performances financially accessible.

Part of the festival’s remit includes working within and between communities to foster understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures.

“Each brushstroke, each note, and each movement speak[s] volumes about the strength, resilience, and beauty of individuals who have crossed continents in search of new beginnings,” add Sanojou and Hosseini.
