Don't call it a comeback

Ever since Amar Doman took over ownership of the BC Lions in the summer of 2021, the club has had a certain swagger.

Doman promised a reboot for the organization, filled with fun and excitement at a community level, and he’s been delivering on that.

For last year’s season opener, the club held a block party on Robson Street, brought in OneRepublic to perform the pre-game kickoff show, opened up the stadium’s upper bowl, and filled BC Place with over 34,000 fans.

This year, they’re bringing in hip hop icon LL Cool J to perform the concert kickoff prior to the June 17 home opener against the Edmonton Elks.

It’ll be the “party of the year,” says Doman.

The two-time Grammy winner announced earlier this year his first headline tour in 30 years, which is slated to hit two dozen cities around the US and Toronto, the tour’s only Canadian stop.

The 55-year-old rapper will be joined in Vancouver by DJ and producer Z-Trip, a pioneer of the mashup movement and recipient of America’s Best DJ award in 2009.

The Lions 2023 season kickoff begins on Friday, June 16 with their Backyard Party on Robson Street with musical entertainment, including a performance from Famous Players Band. Saturday features a performance from Canadian rock band The Trews. Tickets for the concert (and game) start at $25.

BC is set to host the 2024 Grey Cup next fall, and based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s promising to be one hell of a party.
