Russian anti-establishment punk band Pussy Riot is bringing its Riot Days show to North America, including a stop in Vancouver in March.

Formed in 2011, Pussy Riot catapulted into the international spotlight after a 2012 performance at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour resulted in three of its members being imprisoned. Since then, the group has become known as a feminist icon, combining performance art with political activism at shows across the globe.

Riot Days, which first debuted in the United States in 2017, combines theatre, live music, and video to chronicle the experiences of founding member Maria Alyokhina (who was one of the three arrested in 2012). Based on Alyokhina’s book, the show uses multimedia to explore Pussy Riot’s bold impact on the world—from protests, to prison, to politics. Riot Days has won many accolades, including the Total Theatre Award of Edinburgh Festivals and the US Woody Guthrie Prize. Alyokhina will be joined on tour by Pussy Riot’s Diana Burkot (a founding member) and Olga Borisova (who joined in 2016), as well as multi-instrumentalist Alina Petrova.

The tour is hitting many cities in Western Canada, including Kelowna, Edmonton, and Calgary. Vancouver’s show takes place on March 22 at The Pearl. Tickets are on sale now.
