The B.C. government has announced that it will improve the northernmost patch of pavement for anyone who wants to drive from the northern Sunshine Coast to Tierra del Fuego.

Today, the province said that the stretch of Highway 101 linking Lund to Powell River is going to be widened and resurfaced.

This will enhance this stretch for cyclists and motor vehicles leaving Lund, which was a popular haven for Vietnam War draft dodgers in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Their story was told in The End of the Road, a documentary by Tai Uhlmann and Theo Angel.

Residents of Lund are fond of telling people that they're at the top of the Pacific Coast Highway, which is one of the longest driving routes in the world.

Nearby Powell River also has its claim to fame: it's in the traditional territory of the Sliammon First Nation, whose most famous member, Dr. Evan Adams, is an actor and the chief medical health officer of the First Nations Health Authority.

And for beer lovers, Powell River is home Townsite Brewing, which has been described as a living museum in the heart of the community's National Historic Site.

From Powell River, it's necessary to take a short ferry to reach Earls Cove to visit the southern Sunshine Coast. This region offers many popular tourist attractions, including Persephone Brewing Company and its sustainable 4.5-hectare beer farm in Gibsons.

Down the road is Langdale, where another ferry takes people to Horseshoe Bay.

Then folks must drive more than 10,000 kilometres before reaching Chilean capital of Santiago.
