Forum of the Week: Is Metro Vancouver ready to become a megacity?

    1 of 1 2 of 1

The bigger, the better. This is true for a lot of things.

But does it apply to cities?

Is a megacity better than a cluster of small independent towns?

Toronto and Montreal are two examples of megacities. Here in the Lower Mainland, municipalities work together through a federation called Metro Vancouver for the delivery of regional services. Policing is not one of these services.

On Tuesday (April 2), a daylong Vancouver event will explore the question of whether or not the regional district would be better off amalgamating into a single government.

Speakers include Burnaby councillor and Metro Vancouver board chair Sav Dhaliwal. Jonathan Coté, mayor of New Westminster and chair of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, will also be there.

“Alpha-metro Vancouver? Rethinking the Region 2019” takes place at the SFU Harbour Centre (515 West Hastings Street), starting at 8:30 a.m. Find full schedule here.
