A Canadian has finally won a Grand Slam singles tournament.

Today, Bianca Andreescu became the reigning queen of tennis after defeating one of the all-time greats in the U.S. Open.

The 19-year-old from Mississauga won in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-5, over six-time U.S. Open champion Serena Williams.

Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles tournaments, including 13 on hard courts.

In her winner's speech, Andreescu, in a quintessentially Canadian way, said that she was "sorry".

That's because she knew that the New York crowd was cheering for Williams.

Andreescu's triumph is being applauded across Canada, including by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer.

"You've made history and make a whole country very proud," Trudeau tweeted.

Here's what others are saying about Andreescu's win.
