A 39-year-old fugitive is back in custody.

In a news release, Vancouver police said that Tony Okanase was arrested without incident in the Joyce-Collingwood neighbourhood on August 13.

He was captured one day after the high-risk sex offender went missing from a Vancouver halfway house following his release from Mountain Institution.

According to an earlier police news release, Okanase has a "history of violent sexual offences against strangers dating back to 2003".

He was wanted on a Canadawide warrant.

The arrest came after a community-policing volunteer spotted Okanase and reported this to the Vancouver Police Department.
