Earthquake strikes off Alaska Panhandle coast, west of British Columbia
An offshore earthquake struck in the Gulf of Alaska, west of northern British Columbia, yesterday.
The U.S. Geological Survey initially measured it as a 5.0-magnitude quake but later reassessed it as a 4.6-magnitude tremblor, which occurred at 6:08 p.m. (B.C. time) on August 13.
The epicenter, at a depth of 14 kilometres (nine miles), was located off the coast of the Alaska Pandhandle about 87 kilometres (54 miles) southwest of Elfin Cove, Alaska; 199 kilometres (123 miles) southwest of Juneau, Alaska; and 350 kilometres (271 miles) southwest of Whitehorse, Yukon.
A tsunami warning was not issued for this seismic event.
This earthquake follows a 4.0-magnitude offshore quake that occurred north of Alaska, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories in the Beaufort Sea at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles) 10:17 a.m. (B.C. time) on August 12.
