Andre De Grasse can now call himself an Olympic champion.

The Markham, Ontario sprinter blazed past the field today to capture gold in the men's 200-metre final in Tokyo.

His time of 19.62 was a personal best and a Canadian record.

The Olympic silver medal went to American Kenneth Bednarek, who posted a time of 19.68.

Another American, Noah Lyles, took bronze, crossing the finish line in 19.74 seconds.

It's Canada's first gold medal in the men's 200-metre race since Vancouver's Percy Williams accomplished this in 1928. And it's De Grasse's fifth Olympic medal.

Another Canadian, Aaron Brown, came sixth today in the race with a time of 20.20.

Brown and De Grasse will run together when Canada competes in the men's 4 x 100-metre relay.

In the Rio Games in 2016, they were part of Canada's bronze-medal-winning 4 x 100-metre relay team.
