The Transportation Safety Board is investigating a small-aircraft crash that killed all four people onboard.

One of the passengers was former Alberta premier Jim Prentice.

The Alberta-registered Cessna took off from Kelowna and went down around 9:40 last evening near Winfield.

Prentice, a Calgary lawyer, was first elected to Parliament in 2004. After the Conservatives formed government in 2006, he became minister of Indian affairs and northern development. He later became industry minister and environment minister before abruptly quitting in 2010 to take a job as vice chairman of CIBC.

It came shortly after Prentice visited Haida Gwaii with environmentalist David Suzuki.

In 2014 Prentice became premier of Alberta but within less than a year, lost his job when the Rachel Notley–led NDP won an unexpected landslide.

Prentice was 60 years old at the time of his death.
