Watching Donald Trump win with Democrats Abroad in Vancouver

Going into last night's U.S. election, expatriate American Democrats in Vancouver were feeling cautiously optimistic. After all, last-minute polling indicated that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was headed for victory by a close but decisive margin over her Republican opponent, Donald Trump.

As election night progressed, however, it became clear that the race was a lot closer than pollsters—or anyone—expected.

In downtown Vancouver, the local chapter of Democrats Abroad congregated to watch the election returns at Waterfront Station, with an estimated 600 people spread across two events at Rogue Wetbar & Kitchen and Steamworks Brewery.

As all eyes were affixed to the bar’s many TV screens—anxious for any divinations which could be pulled from the state-by-state results—unexpectedly close races in Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania sent a wave of murmurs across the crowd. At almost every table, potential paths to victory were analyzed, campaign decisions were second-guessed, and hands were wrung.

Here’s how the evening played out locally:

6:14 p.m.: Donald Trump wins Arkansas and Texas. Groans from the crowd.

6:42 p.m.: Clinton wins Connecticut (cheers); Trump wins Louisiana (groans).

6:46 p.m.: CNN host John King announces that the GOP has retained control of the House of Representatives. Boos.

7:00 p.m.: Montana is called for Trump.

7:16 p.m.: New Mexico goes to Clinton, Missouri to Trump

7:27 p.m.: Ohio, rich in electoral college votes, is called for Trump. Huge groans and boos from the crowd.

7:40 p.m.: Clinton wins the hard-fought battle for Virginia. The crowd goes wild.

7:50 p.m.: Colorado goes to Clinton. Huge cheers.

8:00p.m.: California and Hawaii are put in Clinton’s column, giving her the electoral college lead or the first time in the evening, 190-171. A huge cheer echoes throughout the room. Idaho goes to Trump.

8:08 p.m.: The hard-fought battle in North Carolina ends in a Trump victory.

8:17 p.m.: Oregon for Clinton, Nebraska for Trump.

8:35 p.m.: The big one: Trump wins Florida. Trump regains the lead in the electoral college, and it’s now clear that something is going seriously wrong for the Clinton campaign.

      8:42 p.m.: Clinton wins Washington.

8:45 p.m.: A rumor—true, it turns out—begins to circulate through the room that the Immigration Canada website has crashed.

8:48 p.m.: Georgia is called for Trump.

9:00 p.m.: Trump wins Iowa. At this point, a number of people begin filtering out. Some have young children to get home to, but many are clearly just disillusioned.

      11:28 p.m.: Trump wins Wisconsin

11:40 p.m.: CNN reports that Clinton has called Trump to concede.

11:51 p.m.: CNN declares Donald Trump winner of election.
