Style bites

      Hefty Haulers
Celebs like Denise Richards, Britney Spears, and Liv Tyler have started a bit of a trend by hauling Harveys Seatbelt Bags almost everywhere they go. The trendy collection woven from durable car-seatbelt straps comes in bold colours like basic black, race-car red, chocolate brown, and denim blue. They look good but they're tough, too: their fabric and hefty nylon stitching allow them to hold thousands of pounds—or at least the usual array of spare change, lipstick, keys, and cellphones. Australian Boot Company (1968 West 4th Avenue) carries the line, which ranges from wristlets to messenger bags. Prices start at about $90.

      It's a wrap
One advantage of the newly arrived crisp air is that you can break open a fresh fall coat. Good news: if you didn't get a chance to grab a version of the boiled-wool wrap jacket ($235 to $320) that earned Chulo Pony rave reviews last year, it's back on shelves. The asymmetrical cut infuses a bit of Japan via the high neckline while the grommetted hook closures and wrap cut evoke a touch of Tibet. Plus, it's cozy and warm. Try it in a charcoal mélange if you're a casual gal or try a sophisticated winter white if every day is a dress-up affair. Find them at Life of Riley (3695 Main Street) or Spank (various locations).

      Brush strokes
It's clear that long locks are de rigueur for the fall season (take a peek at Christian Dior's RTW show). The only drawback is keeping manes luscious and healthy. Goody's newly expanded line of Ouchless products steps in to lend a hand, or a brush. Maybe start with the Shower and Detangling Comb ($3.99) to work conditioner through your tresses, then move on to a brush. The Cushion and Vent Brush ($10.99) works for all lengths and comes in a choice of blue, purple, or pink. The pièce de résistance is the Hot Round Collection ($13.99) of ceramic-barrelled brushes for professional straightening; they come in three sizes tailored to hair length. As a bonus, the quick-release button withdraws the bristles for easy cleaning. Goody is available at local drugstores and supermarkets.

      Putting on a poetic face
The ruffles and lace of this season's high-necked blouses call for something a little more poetic than your standard black-kohl eyes and matte-red lips. Aveda seems to have the concept down with three new makeup looks for autumn. One dubbed Poetic Shimmer is all about gothic glamour, with a deep-crimson pucker (in either Pomegranate Juice or Hawthorn Berry), smoky-pink eyes (in Petal Essence Face Accents' Plum Touch powder), and shimmer brow and cheekbone accents (try Moonstone Inner Light Shimmer Accents). Another, called A Dream of Rose, finds the flush look of a Renaissance painting: nude lips (try the Elestial Quartz Lip Glaze) play off blossom-hued eyes (look to the Petal Essence Eye Colour Duo in Hollyhock/Freesia) and rosy cheeks (Plum Touch face accents). For more drama, try the Deeply Lavender look: glowy skin (Terrastone Inner Light Shimmer Accents) combines with blue-purply played-up eyes (Petal Essence Eye Colour Duo in Lavenlight/Indiga) and played-down lips set off with Elestial Quartz Lip Glaze. Prices range from about $18.50 for lip liner to $27.50 for face accents. Scared you'll end up with too-pink or bruisy eyes? Check into Eccotique (1838 West 1st Avenue) for a makeup application ($40); you can buy all the Aveda cosmetics there too.
