First Nations culture fuses its style with hip-hop in the new multimedia show Beat Nation at the grunt gallery, opening Friday night (June 26) and running till August 1. Cocurators Tania Willard and Skeena Reece have gathered everything from Native graffiti art to indigenous-language hip-hop in an exhibition that celebrates the burgeoning world of visual culture and music developed through the Web site Beatnation.org. Pieces include the Star Wars–meets–Native regalia paintings of Yakama contemporary artist Bunky Echo-Hawk (shown above). The show was part of the recent B.C. Scene festival in Ottawa.
