Bloomin' Balmy

When the Georgia Straight phoned Linda Quibell early last Saturday morning, she was lying in bed, sipping a cup of coffee, and studying James Joyce's Ulysses. "I'm making sure I know how to pronounce everything," she said. The actor, who is also artistic and managing director of Felix Culpa theatre company, was preparing for her marathon 24-hour solo reading of the novel. It will take place from midnight on Tuesday (June 15) until midnight Wednesday (June 16), starting at the Granville Book Company--which is cosponsoring the event with Felix Culpa--and concluding at the Irish Heather Pub in Gastown. It's all part of the centenary of Bloomsday. The action of Joyce's 1922 novel, which follows Leopold Bloom, his wife, Molly, and Stephen Dedalus, all takes place on June 16, 1904. "I came up with the idea and now I have to do it," Quibell said of the fundraising endurance test. Members of the public will be able to pledge support by the hour and monies will directly benefit the Carnegie Centre's literacy program. "I'm going to make sure I'm well rested," Quibell said from her bed. "I'm not going to take stimulants until later in the event. I won't overdose on coffee early on."
