Safeway kills the Club Card
1 of 1 2 of 1
Safeway has announced it's saying bye-bye to the Club Card.
On the Canada Safeway Facebook page came this "big announcement" today (April 3):
Starting April 4th you won’t need a Club Card to get the sale price at Safeway! Everyone gets our lowest price, every day. No Club Card or phone number required! Keep your receipt though, you’ll need the promo code printed on it to claim your fuel rewards!
So, no more having to tell the cashier you haven't had a card since university or trying to remember the phone number you had 10 years ago.
Sobeys Inc., an Empire Company Limited subsidiary, completed its $5.8-billion acquisition of Canada Safeway in November 2013.

I used to enjoy signing up for a new card every time I shopped using the names of historical dictators. Sad to see them go.

Even with savings everything was overpriced, just like Save-on-Foods.

Aha! I refused to get card and stopped shopping at Safeway. Why? Because I didn't think it was right that you would have to get a card and disclose your personal buying preferences in exchange for paying the regular price. If they want to use my personal information for marketing purposes, fine. Pay me. You're aren't getting a free ride from me. So now I guess I will be shopping at Safeway once again.

Made up a name and phone number for their records years ago and used it for many other such scams ever since.

Someone has to pay that $$$5.8 billion Sobeys just spent to aquire Safeway. That will be the customers as usual.

Finally.
I can return to do some of my food shopping at Safeway.
I can know I am getting fair and honest price for the products I can afford.
I can see in the check out lines that I am just as valued as a 'Club Card carrier'.
This was long overdue in my opinion.

But how is the cashier supposed to thank you by name now? I love when strangers butcher my last name.

Real Canadian Superstore has lower prices than Safeway and bagging your own groceries is easy.
