Luke Doucet shows off his chops for ex-boss Sarah McLachlan

It's a drag that more people didn't show up early when Luke Doucet and the White Falcon—featuring Doucet's wife and singing partner, Melissa McClelland—opened for Gomez at the Orpheum on Friday night (March 12). But at least ex-boss Sarah McLachlan was in the house for their barnburner of a set, which included a Neil Young-styled cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" among the twangy originals.

"Believe it or not, this is the first time Sarah has ever seen me play live with my own band," Doucet later told the Straight, when asked about his longtime Vancouver employer, who used his skills again during those Olympic festivities. "Okay, she caught me at some club in Australia about eight years ago, but that was in a duet." No wonder the veteran guitar slinger, now based in Hamilton, Ontario (and seen here hoisting his eponymous Gretsch), threw in a snippet of "Building a Mystery" in his intro to "Sundown".
