Most people are familiar with the story of Cinderella, but fewer will know that its origins date back more than 1,000 years to China’s Tang Dynasty. Just like Disney’s 1950 animated classic, Ye Xian tells the tale of a girl whose life is changed with thanks to a little bit of magic—only, in the Asian version, her Fairy Godmother is manifested in the form of a magical goldfish. The rags-to-riches story has been retold throughout the ages and all over the world in Vietnam, Korea, France, Germany, and beyond.
The Children’s Theatre of Richmond’s upcoming production of Cinderella promises to be a contemporary adaptation of the story we know and love, while acknowledging its rich history and Asian heritage. It will feature Rodgers and Hammerstein’s poignant, memorable melodies, but will also reflect the story of Ye Xian through thoughtful design elements.
The Children’s Theatre of Richmond is a new, nonprofit theatre group that provides youths in the Lower Mainland with the opportunity to perform musicals in professionally produced productions. The shows are cast entirely with young adults, some of whom have experience on the Disney Channel and in musical productions, and others with professional training in musical theatre.
The cast is led by a diverse, creative group of internationally well-known directors, choreographers, artists, and theatre designers. The productions are performed across Vancouver at the Massey Theatre, Gateway Theatre, Norman Rothstein Theatre, and Granville Island Stage. Advanced technology in lighting and backdrop projection design ensure that every Children’s Theatre of Richmond show is a stunning visual spectacle.
The Children’s Theatre of Richmond’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s G2K Cinderella takes place from May 17 to 25 at the Granville Island Stage (1585 Johnston Street). Tickets are on sale now and start at $18. To purchase yours, or for more information visit the website.
