B.C. premier John Horgan issued the following statement today:

“Jewish families throughout British Columbia and around the world will come together to celebrate Passover with food, wine and songs, beginning this evening at sunset.

“On the first night of Passover, friends and family gather for the seder to retell the story of the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt to liberation.

“People of the Jewish faith take this time to honour their history and the fight for freedom from oppression, past and present.

"The Passover story reminds us that we must have the courage to stand together against injustice, and fight for a better world.

“To everyone in the Jewish community who is celebrating, I wish you a happy Passover, and Chag Pesach Sameach!”

      Update

On April 21, Horgan issued the following statement about Easter:

“This weekend, Christians in every part of British Columbia will gather with friends and family to celebrate Easter.

“Easter is a time of hope and joy for Christians around the world – a yearly reminder of the power of love, humility and self-sacrifice, as exemplified by the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“It also marks the end of Lent, a time of fasting and charitable giving, where Christians are called to participate in the redemption of the world through repentance and forgiveness.

“To all those British Columbians celebrating Easter this weekend, I wish you a blessed and joyful holiday.”
