Wreck Beach named the planet’s number-one urban spot for nature-loving nudists

Vancouver has been named the best place in the world for those whose perfect day at the beach starts with birthday suit–issue boobs, dongs, and babymakers.

A new list from nudebeachmap.com lists 10 urban spots around the world that sand-and-surf loving nudists need to see before they die. The key word there is “urban,” the main criteria being: “Forget long hikes, these city beaches are dead easy to access.”

Trouncing the competition from Hawaii, Australia, Denmark, and the US was Vancouver’s Wreck Beach.

There’s evidence to suggest that nudebeachmap.com is indeed a credible thing, with the site founded by a couple named Matt and Megan having over 54,000 followers on Instagram. The twosome’s mission statement is this: “We’re a couple in our 30s that discovered swimming nude and tanning sans clothing is AMAZING. We also realized that a lot of misconceptions about nude beaches are just that—misconceptions. They’re approachable, full of ‘normal’ people, and most of all, they are accessible and accepting to everyone.”

In explaining their criteria for the world’s best urban nude beaches, Matt and Megan wrote: “Finding clothing-optional beaches is straightforward in quaint seaside towns or secluded spots. Sometimes, if a beach is deserted enough, you might even manage to discreetly strip down for a quick skinny dip. However, locating a prime nude beach near a bustling city can be more challenging. Despite this, such beaches exist and are gaining popularity as a means to escape the fast-paced urban life. After all, what could be better than shedding your clothes and basking in the sun, sans fabric?”

To get their rankings, nudebeachmap.com started with a score based on its own review and then factored in Google ratings. Bonus points where given to beaches when they were closer to the centre of the city than competition.

Located down a seemingly endless set of stairs on the University of British Columbia, wreck beach is famous as a place where nude hippies and freelance exhibitionists stroll along, selling everything from fruit kabobs to pot cookies. And where shrinkage and out-of-control high beams are both legitimate concerns considering that the West Coast isn’t exactly Hawaii or Mexico as far as the weather goes.

Here’s what nudebeachmap.com cofounders Matt and Megan had to say about Vancouver’s favourite clothing-optional recreational spot:

Canada’s largest nude beach feels like it is a million miles away from civilization and stays true to its name—coming here you feel like you’ve been shipwrecked and landed on a nude oasis.

Vendors ply the beach and sell everything you could wish for (and some things you probably haven’t tried since high school!).

Wreck is the best of both worlds and the reason why it ranks number on the list. It’s only 25 minutes away from bustling traffic in downtown Vancouver but it feels like you’re on vacation somewhere else. Eagles soar above the beach and the outlook towards Vancouver Island is completely devoid of buildings or houses.

Wreck Beach is a great place for newbies and despite being the number-one nude beach, clothing is optional here. But we’re sure the relaxed vibe will have your baring all in no time—not that anyone cares either way!”

Rounding out the top five were Miami’s Haulover Beach, Barcelona’s Platja de la Mar Bella, Sydney’s Lady Bay Beach, and Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point Beach.
