VIFF 2013 review: Dormant Beauty

(Italy/France)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

The title here should have been translated as Sleeping Beauty, obviously, since it centres on four tales driven by women in comas. Veteran Marco Bellocchio directed this overly long, fitfully engaging movie, and he has a good eye for telling absurdities in Italian life and politics. But the great Isabelle Huppert’s subplot is silly, and the tale becomes tediously repetitive.
