Telefilm Canada to fund three B.C. films among 11 Indigenous productions

Among the 11 new Indigenous feature films that Telefilm Canada announced that they'll be funding will be three from B.C. filmmakers.

The national organization announced on August 8 that they will be allocating $4.7-million in financing for these features.

Seven of the projects are headed up by female filmmakers, thus making good on Telefilm's commitment to addressing gender disparity in Canadian screen industries. That's in addition to their support of works by Indigenous filmmakers.

Projects from B.C. include Marie Clements' first narrative feature Red Snow. Clements recently released documentary-musical The Road Forward, explored the history and legacy of the B.C.–based Native Voice newspaper and the Indigenous activism related to it.

Local filmmaker Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers will write and direct the dramatic feature Stay. Tailfeathers starred in the feature film On the Farm, about women living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside during the period before the arrest of serial killer Robert William Pickton.

A third B.C. film is Edge of the Knife, a drama directed by Gwaai Edenshaw and written by Jaalan Edenshaw.

Inuit actor Lucy Tulugarjuk, who has starred in Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner and Maliglutit, will direct the action-adventure feature Ababa and Pingua, to be produced by Marie-Hélène Cousineau (Uvanga).
