What to watch on Disney+ Canada in September 2021
Releases include Reservation Dogs, Star Wars: Visions, Doogie Kamealoha M.D., and a Billie Eilish concert film
Here are our picks for the best new movies and TV shows coming to Disney+ Canada in September 2021.
Reservation Dogs
For everyone who’s been asking when Canadians will get to FX’s breakout Indigenous comedy-drama—created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi and featuring rising screen star Devery Jacobs—we finally have an answer. Reservation Dogs premieres on the Star service in September, with episodes rolling out four weeks behind their U.S. availability. The series, which follows the misadventures of four Oklahoma teens (Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor, and Paulina Alexis) experimenting with petty crime, has been getting rave reviews from American critics; no, we haven’t had the chance to see it yet. But we can’t wait. New episodes weekly from September 1
Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter To Los Angeles
Just months after her Apple documentary, Billie Eilish jumps to Disney to celebrate the release of her new record with “an intimate performance of every song in the album’s sequential order—for the first and only time—from the stage of the legendary Hollywood Bowl.” Directed by Robert Rodriguez (wait, what?) and Patrick Osbourne, the special also promises animated elements, “taking viewers on a dreamlike journey through Billie’s hometown of Los Angeles and its most iconic backdrops”. So, not a conventional concert movie at all, probably. September 3
Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.
The latest update or reboot of a beloved '90s IP finds Andi Mack star Peyton Elizabeth Lee donning Neil Patrick Harris’s lab coat to play Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, a 16-year-old medical prodigy whose life would be awfully complicated even if her supervisor at the hospital wasn’t her own mother (Kathleen Rose Perkins). Kourtney Kang, a writer and producer on How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off The Boat, should bring an interesting perspective to this version of the story, and it’ll be nice to see Jason Scott Lee (no relation) getting the chance to loosen up as Lahela’s dad after a string of heavy action roles. We’re just curious how they explain the whole “Doogie” thing in this one. New episodes weekly from September 8
Star Wars: Visions
While everyone waits for the Boba Fett show later this fall, Disney and Lucasfilm have something entirely new to keep fans occupied: an anthology of nine new Star Wars shorts produced by seven anime studios, with soundtracks in both Japanese and English. If you’re old enough to remember The Animatrix, it’s sort of like that. And as with that 2003 anthology, it’s as much a reclamation as homage: George Lucas “borrowed” considerably from the films of Akira Kurosawa—and thus from centuries of Japanese history—in creating Star Wars in the first place. (Seriously, watch The Hidden Fortress sometime. It’s basically all there.) September 22
