What's In Your Fridge: Allie Sheldan of Little Destroyer

    1 of 4 2 of 4

What’s in Your Fridge is where the Straight asks interesting Vancouverites about their life-changing concerts, favourite albums, and, most importantly, what’s sitting beside the Heinz ketchup in their custom-made Big Chill Retropolitan 20.6-cubic-foot refrigerators.

      On the grill

      Allie Sheldan

      Who are you

Hi. My name is Allie and I am 1/3 of Little Destroyer. Along with my bandmates Chris & Michael, we are a weirdo grungy alt-pop band. Have you heard of Little Destroyer? Luckily for you, now you have and the Georgia Straight has been kind enough to even provide a link to our new music video. GO WATCH IT!

      First concert

For a period of time in my young life the only band that mattered was the Living End. Now, when you are a pre-teen it’s very difficult to wrap you head around… almost everything, which includes how an underground punk band from Australia could ever possibly end up in your city… but my first concert was seeing the Living End open up for Green Day at the Plaza of Nations (almost 18 years ago!). And if them being in Vancouver wasn’t enough of a mind-bending experience here is a list (in no particular order) of other “the best night ever” type of shit that happened: Tré Cool lit his whole drum kit on fire at the end of the Green Day set; I climbed onto a strangers shoulders and felt like a goddamned emperor for approx. a song and a half; Scott Owen (TLE Bass player) did that thing where you stand on the side of your upright bass but keep playing and you’re at this crazy balanced angle and I still don’t quite understand those physics; and I got to hang out with my very best friend in the world Whitney, who was who introduced me to the Living End, without parental supervision. and we collectively lost our fucking minds for about five hours.

      Life-changing concert

Honestly and I’m not just being lazy: it was the Living End and Green Day concert at the Plaza of Nations… for all the reason I listed. So re-read the previous answer but pretend like it’s a new answer. But also, I will meet you halfway and say the Kills on their Blood Pressures tour at the Commodore in 2011. I don’t know if anyone in recent history are as cool as Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince.

      Top three records

This is obviously an impossible questioned designed to throw musicians into some type of mental breakdown/indecisive tailspin so I’m just going all Clash #theonlybandthatmatters

The Clash The Clash; The Clash London Calling; The Clash Combat Rock  The Clash have been a massive influence on me ever since Combat Rock was my only cassette in my first tour van (RIP mouldy van the great) and I could rattle off innumerable reasons why these records, but it should also be self-explanatory, because THE CLASH! But if it’s not self-evident to you—and that’s okay I’ll forgive you—you need to listen to the podcast on Spotify called Stay Free: The Story of The Clash. Bonus: it’s narrated by Chuck D.

      All-time favourite video

Okay. but I can’t just pick one...

No Doubt "Just a Girl"  I’m sure I speak for a lot of women in saying that Gwen Stefani was a beacon of hope in what was (and still is) the heavily saturated male dominated rock/alt market. She also bridges the gap between being a rock star and a pop star and that will always be impressive to me. Favourite music video moment: when Gwen does push-ups. I definitely bit this from her and do it during our live performances!

Nine Inch Nails "March of the Pigs"  Not only one of the greatest songs written also a perfect video in how simple it is. I’ll always love a one-shot video and I could watch this on repeat. Favourite moment: when Trent hucks the mic stand and then mic and they clatter onto the ground but a few seconds later a crew member steps into frame and hands him a new one. I have also bit this and have several mic stand and microphone throwing moves that our sound guy JJ definitely.. doesn’t like.

      What's in your fridge

Usually almost nothing because I mostly try to live off of air and sunlight... k not true but still usually almost nothing but let’s go with:

Leftovers. Because imo everything is better cold and the next day.

Cottage cheese. Because I’m a closet geriatric

Bag of uncooked brown rice. Because one time I saw that my parents kept their rice in the fridge and I was like “Omg, I’ve been doing it all wrong for years why has no one told me? MAYBE THIS IS THE ROOT OF ALL MY PROBLEMS”. So far, turns out, not the root of all my problems but my rice at least stays fresher longer.

Thanks Georgia Straight! And thanks readers! Now go watch our video for our single #21 !!!
