Die Antwoord at the PNE Forum

Someone seems to have pushed Die Antwoord’s “overachievers” button. When the pride of white-trash South Africa first surfaced a few years back with a viral video for “Enter the Ninja”, it found itself playing to packed tastemakers at Venue on Granville. Fast-forward a few years, and with no airplay and little mainstream exposure, zef-rappers Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er have, along with their beatmaker, DJ Hi Tek, graduated to the PNE Forum on Tuesday (September 23). Of course, a cavalcade of the world’s most out-of-control videos (“I Fink U Freeky”, “Evil Boy”, “Fatty Boom Boom”) and fuck-off-and-die tweets from no less than Lady Gaga probably haven’t hurt the band’s profile. And maybe there’s the fact that Vancouverites clearly have better taste than those living in Moose Jaw. Still, props to Die Antwoord for coming out of nowhere and playing the kind of 4,000-seat venue normally reserved for platinum-selling artists. Can you say “overachievers”?
