Racism in Vancouver: anti-Asian letter sent to realtor, racist rant on West Van bus

Two incidents in Metro Vancouver involving racism have sparked local online discussions and debates about discrimination.

On September 23, Sutton Group West Coast Realty realtor Winnie Wu posted on social media a photograph of a letter she received that was addressed to her and "all other asian [sic] realtors in our city".

The anonymous sender, using racial slurs, said that Chinese people and other Asians "are not welcome or wanted in our neighbourhood". The writer argued that Chinese people have "invaded, infested, and defaced vancouver [sic] with your presence…like a sea of marauding ants" and are "spreading uninvited into it's [sic] neighbouring cities, including Coquitlam and beyond".

The writer then goes on to criticize Asians: "You are a singularly ugly race…..your appearance, culture, language, your unbridled greed."

Despite not revealing his or her own racial identity, the writer states: "The citizens who belong here, who were long here before you people pushed your way in, have no use for you".

The sender complains about empty houses in the neighbourhood, such as one that the writer assumes was "probably bought" by an "offshore" Chinese person, and that leaving a house vacant leaves it "open to vandalism".

Wu has since removed the post from her Facebook page. However, she had previously stated that she had reported the letter to the police.

Also on September 23, a heated argument erupted between passengers on a West Vancouver bus around 8 p.m. on the No. 250 route from Horseshoe Bay to Vancouver. A video of the incident was uploaded to social media on the same day.

According to reports, a blond woman with a ponytail was sitting on a seat with her belongings on the neighbouring seat. When another passenger asked if she would remove her belongings so she could sit down, an argument arose that involved racist insults and eventually expanded to include other passengers.

She made verbal threats to kill other passengers when she realized she was being filmed, and physically moved towards others in a threatening manner. She continued swearing at and insulting others, passengers asked the driver to stop the bus.

On September 25, CTV News reported that the woman claimed in an interview that she he had calmly stated that she had bags whereupon the other woman's male friend began to say something in another language. She claimed that she has post-traumatic stress disorder and felt threatened.

Transit Police are conducting an investigation.

In June, another woman engaged in a foul-mouthed racist rant against other passengers was captured on video on a bus in East Vancouver.

In August, racist graffiti was found on a bus-stop poster for the movie Crazy Rich Asians, prior to its release.

Over several months in 2017, a series of discriminatory graffiti was found across Metro Vancouver.

In 2016 and 2017, police were investigating a series of racist, anti-Asian, and white supremacist flyers distributed in various areas of the Lower Mainland, including Richmond, Chilliwack, and Abbotsford.
