A male suspect is in custody after a police pursuit along Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver.

Around 8 p.m. on January 3, Surrey RCMP received a report of a possible assault taking place in a vehicle.

The suspect's vehicle was described as a white BMW sedan that was believed to have been heading to Chilliwack.

When an officer located the vehicle in the Chilliwack area and pulled his police vehicle behind the suspect's sedan, the driver reversed and crashed into the police vehicle.

As the suspect fled, police from several jurisdictions pursued him along Highway 1 from Chilliwack through Abbotsford and into Langley.

As the victim of the alleged assault was believed to be still in the vehicle, officers set up a spike belt, which brought the BMW to a halt on Highway 1 near 232 Street.

The suspect was arrested and a passenger was found safe in the vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone who was in the area at the time or may have information about this incident is asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
