A female senior who was walking home in West Vancouver was injured during a violent robbery on New Year’s Day.

According to the West Vancouver Police Department (WVPD), an 86-year-old woman departed from Loblaws City Market at Park Royal Mall in West Vancouver around 5:10 p.m. on January 1. She headed home by walking westbound on Marine Drive.

When she reached the intersection of Marine Drive and 11th Street, she turned right and headed north on 11th Street.

At that point, an unknown person allegedly approached her from behind and grabbed her purse, which was slung over her shoulder, and pushed her to the ground.

The suspect ran off with the purse in an unknown direction.

The victim flagged down a passerby who remained with her until emergency services arrived.

She had suffered a fractured shoulder and was taken to hospital for treatment.

As the victim was approached from behind, she was unable to provide a description of the suspect.

Although police extensively searched the area, they were unable to locate a suspect.

Items in the cream-coloured purse included a wallet with a bank card and credit card.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the WVPD at 604-925-7300 or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
