The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is once again investigating how a man died in an interaction with police.

The latest case involves a fatality in Nanaimo.

It came after RCMP officers responded to a report of a confrontation between a man and a woman outside a vehicle around 2 p.m. on July 23. The vehicle was parked in the middle of Haliburton Street near Highview Terrace, according to a B.C. RCMP News release.

"Upon police arrival, the man had allegedly produced a weapon," the B.C. RCMP stated. "Shots were fired by police and the man was injured. BC Emergency Health Services attended, however, despite all efforts, the man died at the scene. No one else was injured."

The IIO investigation comes in the wake of recent announcements of other investigations.

On July 21, the IIO disclosed that it's looking into how a man ended up with a serious but non-life-threatening injury in Vancouver. This came in connection with Vancouver police responding to a report of a person swinging an object in the 300 block of East Hastings. The incident occurred around 12:35 a.m. on July 2, according to the IIO statement.

On July 18, the IIO disclosed that it's investigating a death in Mission. This came after the RCMP responded to a report of a man pacing on the northbound sidewalk of the Mission Bridge.

"Officers attended and it is reported that the man had a weapon and climbed over the railing when officer attempted to take him into custody. The man subsequently fell into the water below," the IIO stated.

That news release came a day after the IIO had stated that it's investigating a police-involved shooting death in the Commercial Drive area of Vancouver. Police said that the deceased man had a weapon and was a suspect in a break-in near the intersection of Railway Street and Gore Avenue.
