The B.C. Prosecution Service has laid one criminal charge against a man in hospital with injuries.

John Corey McKay, 52, faces a count of aggravated assault following an alleged attack on a Vancouver police officer.

It occurred around 8:30 a.m. on July 30 near the corner of East Hastings and Columbia streets.

According to police, a man with a weapon came up to a police car and struck one of the officers in the head through a window.

Police say they tried to subdue him with a taser before shots were fired.
